How to get over 5000 followers on Twitter

So you are getting closer to 5000 mark, congrats! This is really awesome! But it might be a bit tricky to pass it when Twitter does not allow you to follow more than 5000 accounts if you have less than 5k followers.

With following 4 rules you can easily get over 5k followers milestone and just build up your Twitter audience does not matter how popular your account is:

  1. Follow and engage with relevant accounts on daily basis
  2. Unfollow ignoring users
  3. Respond to direct messages and be careful with auto DMs
  4. Tweet often

Follow and engage with relevant accounts on daily basis

Why is it important to engage with other users? Twitter is an overcrowded network, with lots of very popular accounts everybody is following and listening to. If you do not make a move yourself, it is less likely you will get noticed. Imagine a party you attend where you do not know anybody. Unless you are already a very popular person or you know the host and he/she would introduce you to the rest it is most likely you would be standing somewhere in the corner just watching the party go by. Unless you express initiative, come up to people and introduce yourself. If you do, you might leave the party with quite a few new friends!

Same thing with social networks. You have to engage. And when you grow your account you have to do it often.

But whom should you engage with? Where can you find those accounts? This is easy. Find an influencer in your niche, a very popular account that is relevant to your business or interest. And simply go through their list of followers. But do not blindly follow all the followers. This would only grow the number of users you follow with very low conversion (number of people following you back). To increase your chances of being followed back you have to express your interest in that person. To begin with, be genuine (well up to a point). Check each account be fore you engage, check the following/followers ratio. If the account is followed by 100k people but follows only 23, chances are you not going to get followed back. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but we will get back to it later.

  • Check how active the account is, how many tweets were posted. When was the last tweet?
  • What is he/she tweeting about? Many people follow lots of random accounts. Many people tweet some really weird stuff. Before you engage, make sure that content posted by the user is in similar interests area as yours. Let's say if you starting an icecream business in New York it is less likely people constantly tweeting about oil industry in Siberia would be very much interested.

To figure out if the account is relevant takes about a second. If you see that it could be a good match, engage, like several tweets, if you find something really interesting don't be shy and retweet. After that follow that user. This way of engagement increases your chances of conversion from 1.5% to 32%, we did our testing 🙂

Before we wrap up this topic, I just wanted to mention that following popular accounts in your business niche even if you know they will not follow you back is not bad at all! One of the very good reasons why to follow them is that you might be spotted by similar guys like yourself going through the followers of that very account. So don't follow people just to be followed back!

Unfollow ignoring users

It may sound harsh, but in order to get over 5000 followers milestone, you need to clean up your account frequently. Otherwise, you would reach your limits of the number of users you follow and you would not be able to engage with anybody else. If you are not engaging then you are not growing.

My strategy here is to dedicate one day a week to detox. For six days you engage with other users, follow them, and then one day you just go through your list of users you follow and unfollow those who did not follow you back. Some people unfollow you as well due to their own reasons. So unless they provide some great unique content you are interested in, there is no need to keep them.

There is another very good reason why you need to keep your account clean. Your image! Yes, it sounds stupid, but in reality people do look at the number of users you follow and how many follow you back. If you follow 4900 users and have only 20 followers your chances are very slim. People would think that your content is not worth their time. It is more likely to be followed when you have 10 followers and you follow 10 people, rather than you have 100 followers and you follow 5000 people. If your numbers are low it only means you are only starting your journey, and many people are happy to help. When your ratio is huge, then you are treated as a spammer.

Respond to direct messages and be careful with auto DMs

If you receive a direct message, take your time and answer it. It is great to start a conversation and get to know each other better. This way you can build a relationship and increase trust in your business.

Quite often you would receive an auto DM from the accounts you followed. I personally don't like those, but I still advise on responding to those messages, unless they are strict sales or spam message, like "Buy my new book on Amazon" or "Follow me on Instagram".

If you decided to use auto direct messages, it is absolutely fine, but just make sure you are being polite and at least introduce yourself. Don't write extremely long messages, those are less likely to be read. People don't have time these days, and they just met you. So no need to be boring right away 🙂

Another thing to watch out for is dummy algorithms in auto DMs. Some tools don't check if the message was sent to you already and can send the same message again and again. Receiving an auto DM is not the best thing, but getting the same message several times is so BAD. That can damage your account credibility.

Automation is great, but human interaction is better. So if you can avoid using auto DMs, do it!

Tweet often

Remember when we talked about following relevant accounts, one of the checks was to see how active the account is? Well, same goes for you. If you do not tweet, but only engage, you are going to struggle. Imaging the same party where you know nobody. If you come up to a group of people and only introduce yourself (which is better than nothing) and then stay silently listening to others, how likely do you think people would remember you? Well, they might if you look extraordinary. But most likely people remember those who told great stories, did something cool, was entertaining.

Same on Twitter. You have to deliver great content. Your tweets need to stand out with great media used, right hashtags etc..

But what if you don't have much to share now? The content you share does not have to be yours. You can share great blog posts you read, some tools you use, other tweets you liked! It could be time-consuming, I know. I recommend having a stream of tweets going in the loop as your background activity. This way when you don't have anything to share, or just taking some time off you account remains active. It is also useful if you want to deliver your content to your audience since with looping tweets you increase your chances of engagement because your tweet is getting seen by more people throughout the looping cycle. And of course, I would recommend you to use Bludged.com for looping tweets. It is easy to use, it is free to use, and it is our product and this is how good I am at selling it 🙂 If you fancy giving it a try there is a post explaining how to set up looping tweets.

How to grow your Twitter audience on autopilot

You hear it quite often that running your social media on autopilot is bad. And I cannot agree more, it is. But many small businesses do not have resources (budget, time, people) to spare on content marketing all the time. If this sounds familiar then this is the article for you.

A couple of months ago our Twitter account had around 800 followers. I was busy working on new functionality for the product and could not spare much time on content creation and promotion online. I also did not have budget to hire somebody to help me out. So I started using following three tools and less than a minute a day after the initial setup to keep it going and growing. Today we have over 3k followers.

So let's get to it.

Create your Twitter Message List

Bludged.com Twitter Message List

This is the first and the most time consuming step. But you do it once and revisit once a month or so.

You need to create a list of tweets that will be posted to your feed in a loop. Which means your feed will be always alive and plus you will be constantly promoting your product.

I used Bludged.com to create my Twitter Message List. There are several alternatives out there, but for starters this is our own product and another good reason to use it - it is free and you can hook up as many accounts as you want. Here is an article with step by step guide on how to set up looping tweets.

You can play with your publishing frequency and times to configure the best schedule. In my case I tweet once an hour. In order to get your Twitter Message List perform as expected I would suggest to have at least twice more tweets in the list than number of times you tweet daily. For example, if you plan on posting once an hour it'll make 24 tweets a day. In this case add at least 50 tweets to your Twitter Message List.

Engage with new relevant accounts

Twiends application

Another very important thing is to keep engaging with other people and ideally with those who are relevant to your business.

I came across this awesome tool - Twiends.com. It is easy to set up, you only have to log in with your Twitter account, specify your interests and you are ready. Then you'll be getting suggestions to engage with certain accounts and once you start following you will notice that your followers count starts raising.

Keep your account clean

Crowdfireapp

It does not look very good when you follow 5000 people and only 15 follow you back. So it is a good idea to clean up your account from time to time in order to unfollow those who either did not follow you back or stopped following.

There is a great tool for that - Crowdfireapp. They offer lots of cool features, such as recent followers, non followers, recent unfollowers, auto replies and much more. I only use "recent unfollowers" and "non followers" in order to clean up my account.

Conclusions

So follow these three simple steps:

  1. Set up your Twitter Message List (one hour once a month
  2. Engage with relative accounts (daily, 20 seconds)
  3. Clean up you account (daily, 20 seconds)

Every day when I get to the office I launch browser, open Twiends and Crowdfireapp, click through to engage with new people and unfollow those who abandoned me and that is it!

It is not the best content marketing strategy, but it is a better than nothing. And imagine what you can achieve if you spend some time working on your content when you can get that far with only using 40 seconds of your time daily!

How to automate and loop your tweets

Why automate Twitter

The very first thing I wanted to cover in this post is why would you want to automate your Twitter account? The answer is simple, with automation you can work more efficiently and effectively.

What do we mean by automation? Generally when people talk about social media marketing automation they talk about publishing schedule and generating some interaction dynamically. It could be engagement with users or generating content.

In this post we will discuss how to automate you Twitter posting activities - creating Twitter schedule and loop your tweets.

Why looping tweets

Twitter differs from other social networks in a way that content users receive has very short life time. Don't take me wrong, your tweets are still there. But chances that people would see, read and engage with them are very slim the older they get. This is one of the main reasons why you should tweet your content multiple times. This way you increase your chances of engagement.

There are lots of resources out there with suggestions for the best time to tweet. But in reality, unless your business targets a geographically specific region, it is not that simple. In the world of online business your customers are everywhere. And having your Twitter scheduler set for a particular time zone might not be the best choice. My advice is try and adjust. Tweet regularly and check your engagement. After some time you would be able to figure out what are the best times for you to tweet.

How to automate and loop your tweets

Alright, so let's get started! There are several tools out there that can help you with Twitter marketing automation. I would definitely recommend checking out this awesome article by Social Media Examiner "How to Automate Your Tweets: 3 Useful Twitter Apps".

They cover Tweriod, Buffer, and IFTTT. But in this article I am going to talk about Bludged.com. How to use it and why and when would it be the best choice for the job.

Without any further delays let me introduce you to Bludged.com! With this tool you can link as many Twitter and Facebook accounts as you want. And you can schedule as many posts and tweets as you want. Another cool feature of Bludged.com and the one we are going to talk about in more details is Twitter Message Lists.

Bludged.com

When you schedule a tweet in Bludged.com you have an option to add it to one or more lists. Each list is configured with it's own targeting Twitter account and scheduler. So you can send the same tweet to multiple lists and post to different accounts at different times.

You can also configure your list to be active up to a certain date. Let's say you are running a Christmas marketing campaign promoting some products for a limited time only. Just set your list to be active till Christmas and it will automatically switch off after. This way you can be sure that there will be no tweets send after Christmas since your special offer is over then. Pretty handy eh?

Step #1 - Create scheduler

Create scheduler in Bludged.com

First of all create an account at Bludged.com or log in if you are a registered user.

  1. Once logged in, navigate to Schedulers menu (on the left side).
  2. Click "Add New Scheduler" button. Specify scheduler name, time zone, select days you want this scheduler to be active on and time slots. Same time slots will be applied to every selected day of the week.
  3. Click "Save Changes" button. Yes it is that simple.

Now, what if you want to post at different times during weekdays and weekend? You would need to create two schedulers, one for weekdays, another one for weekends, specify those times you want to post at. Problem solved 🙂

Step #2 - Link Twitter account and create Twitter Message List

Link Twitter account to Bludged.com

  1. To link your Twitter account navigate to "Linked Feeds" menu item.
  2. Click "Link Twitter Feed" button. If you are already logged into your Twitter account it would be picked up automatically. If not, then you would have to log in first before you can authorize Bludged.com application to post on your behalf.

If you need to link multiple Twitter accounts, after first one is linked, log out from your Twitter account (not Bludged.com system), and perform previous two steps again.

Step #3 - Add tweets to the list

Add tweets to Bludged.com Twitter message list

To add tweets to your list there are two options:

  1. Create a stand alone tweet and also add it to a list(s)
  2. Or create a tweet within the list (this way this tweet will be used only within this list and cannot be added to other lists)

To create a stand alone tweet:

  1. Navigate to Posts menu
  2. Click "Create Tweet" button.
  3. Select Twitter account you want this tweet to be published to. Enter your tweet message, add image if necessary, specify when you want this tweet to be published (date, time, and time zone). And you can also select list(s) you want this tweet to be a part of.
  4. Click "Save" button

To add new tweet to a particular list:

  1. Navigate to Twitter Lists menu
  2. Click on "View List Tweets" button (a small button on the right side with an eye icon)
  3. Click "Add new Tweet" button and add your message, add image if necessary.
  4. Click "Save" button.

We recommend to have at least two and a half time more tweets in your list than number of time slots selected for each day. For example: if you have your scheduler configured to post Monday to Friday every half an hour between 8 AM and 8 PM that would be 24 posts a day. Then multiple 24 by 2.5 and you will get 60. This is a minimum number of tweets we would recommend to have in your list before you activate it. Why? Because Twitter treats tweets as duplicate if they have identical text and posted frequently. Nobody knows what is the exact frequency you can post the same tweet. Beside Twitter guys. But based on my testing if you have a couple of days and several tweets in between it should not be a problem.

Step #4 - Sit back and relax

Now when you have enough tweets scheduled it is time to activate the list. Grab a beer, sit back and relax. Have one for me as well!
